Net income for the quarter rose to 10.1 billion rupees ($201 million) from 8.8 billion rupees. That was higher than the median profit forecast of 9.37 billion rupees from analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. 

Total revenue jumped 13% to 64.5 billion rupees from 57 billion rupees, with the key information technology services division contributing more than three-quarters of those revenues. The figures were calculated using Indian accounting standards. 
Wipro (WIT:8.16, +0.15, +1.9%),India's third largest software exporter, also has business interests in IT products, outsourcing and lighting. 

The company forecast between $1.009 billion and $1.025 billion in revenue from IT services in the quarter ending June 30, lower than the $1.058 billion posted in the three months ended March 31. 

Chairman Azim Premji said the company did "a major re-organization" of its software business at the beginning of the last financial year and hopes to emerge stronger than before. 

Chief Financial Officer Suresh Senapaty said operating margins for the software business expanded to 21.8% during the quarter from 21% in year-earlier period, in spite of lower business volumes. 

Wipro shares rose 1.7% in early Mumbai trading Wednesday, while the 30-stock Sensex added 0.5% to 10,951.50.
